passages
The work “form follows dysfunction” quotes the constructed environment and buildings in various layers of renewal and decay. This series of paintings uses color, form, and texture in a method akin to building.
The paintings, "passages" are inspired by the spaces I observed in Veliko Tarnovo during a month-long residency at the Iatrus Artist Residency. I created two distinct series of two-dimensional painted works. The first series offers representational glimpses of street views and architectural moments in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria. The other abstractly references bridge-like structures in homage to the Yantra River and the history of change in the region. These two series contrast representational and abstract forms to frame the surrounding aesthetic environment and draw attention to liminal spaces within Bulgaria. Tis project explores color and pigment concerning the built environment, emphasizing the concept of physical and metaphorical passages.
