Blueprints… have connotations of potential changes and hint at the shape of things to come.
Blueprints is a series of relief prints using the process of linoleum carving and relief printing. This suite of prints on paper examines the use of architects’ preparatory blueprints, drawings, or sketches as models for what is/will be built. My work quotes the built environment; I often use building materials in my work. Linoleum serves as the matrix, an easier to carve, malleable surface that references the ubiquitous flooring material common in domestic and commercial settings. Here, the paper represents a blueprint. Chin Collé, meaning “to glue,” is a hybrid collage and printmaking process. In the print plat/plot, I used two different papers: a thinner sheet (the plot) is glued to a thicker piece of printmaking paper. The pressure from the press embeds the thinner piece into the thicker one as the image is printed. For the thinner layer, I used a vintage architectural plan/ drawing as a part of the work. Just like marks on a paper reference a plan or a future edifice, and a building leaves a scar or mark on the landscape itself. Blueprints and the word plot carry connotations of potential change and hint at the shape of things to come.
